Address from IEDF Youth League Chairperson, Abongile Nqkayi

Dear Youth of South Africa,

As the Chairperson of the IEDF Youth League, I am honoured to play a critical role in supporting the growth and development of the Youth in the informal economy. Our organisation is dedicated to providing the support and resources needed to empower youth and foster entrepreneurship in townships and rural areas.

Our mission aligns with the spirit of the Uph’ Umntu Omtsha Youth Campaign and its sub-campaign Kasi Phanda-Phanda, focusing on bringing opportunities to young people wherever they are. By revitalizing the strategic sectors of our local economies, we aim to uplift the communities that are often overlooked but are essential to the economic landscape.

The informal economy is a vibrant and dynamic sector, consisting of street vendors, small-scale traders, home-based businesses, freelancers, and many more. These informal activities are vital for employment, innovation, and economic resilience. Yet, they face significant challenges such as limited access to financial services, social protection, and the risk of exploitation. Our goal is to address these challenges by creating a supportive environment for Youth informal workers and entrepreneurs.

We recognise the adaptability and resilience that informal workers have shown in the face of adversity. Our approach is to harness this spirit by providing the necessary tools and resources to help them thrive. This includes advocating for a dedicated portion of social security spending, over R2.5 billion, to be allocated to rural and township economies, ensuring these communities receive the support they need to grow and prosper.

As we move forward, we are committed to empowering the youth of South Africa, fostering entrepreneurship, and creating opportunities for sustainable development. Our aim is to build a future where every young person, regardless of their background or circumstances, can achieve their full potential and contribute to the success of our nation.
