Informal Economy Development Forum with key strategic Partners Successfully Launch the Grow Challenge in Gauteng

The Informal Economy Development Forum (IEDF) is delighted to announce the successful launch of the Grow Challenge in Gauteng, in collaboration with our esteemed partners, MTN, ABSA Bank, E-Learn SA, Recruit SA, AVBOB Dream Team, Brand Boss and Kitso-Botlhale Development Services. The Grow Challenge is an initiative aimed at empowering and supporting micro and informal businesses in the region to accelerate their growth and contribute to the local economy.

The Grow Challenge launch event took place on 21 & 22 June 2023 Diepkloof and Meadowlands Welfare Centres, and it marked the beginning of an exciting journey to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability within the informal economy. The event was attended by representatives from the public sector, private organizations, and community leaders who are committed to supporting the growth and development of micro and informal businesses in Gauteng.

Through strategic partnerships with leading organizations, government and corporate, the Grow Challenge aims to provide comprehensive support and resources to participating businesses. This collaborative effort brings together expertise, networks, and financial support to create a supportive ecosystem for micro and informal entrepreneurs in Gauteng.


The Grow Challenge offers a range of initiatives and services to eligible businesses, including:

Capacity Building and Training: Access to tailored training programs, workshops, and mentorship opportunities to enhance business skills, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen financial management.

Business Development Support: Provision of business advisory services, market research, and guidance on accessing finance and capital for expansion and sustainability.

Networking and Collaboration: Facilitation of networking events, business-to-business matchmaking, and opportunities to connect with potential partners, investors, and customers.

Funding and Grants: Introduction to funding opportunities, grants, and investment options available specifically for micro and informal businesses in Gauteng.

The Grow Challenge launch event featured keynote speeches from prominent industry leaders, and interactive panel discussions on the challenges and opportunities within the informal economy. Participants had the opportunity to engage with our partners and learn more about the support available through the Grow Challenge.
