Cape Town, 8 September 2022 – The Informal Economy Development Forum (IEDF) has noted the court ruling on 9 September 2022, that ruled the 2016 fishing rights allocation to small scale subsistence fishers was procedurally flawed.

The ruling instructs government that all 8500 applicants in the 2016 application process, should re apply for fishing rights.

Paul Bester, the Secretary General of IEDF states “We are happy to note that the court ruled in favor of the affected fishers. We are however concerned that some of these applicants may have passed away or left the fishing industry in totality. The permanent damage to those families will never be corrected “

The IEDF will follow the process closely, and request Government to follow the procedures to allow all 8500 applications are fairly considered.
